April 1, 2015 through August 3, 2015
Displaying 140, extraordinary couture and ready-to-wear ensembles along with their accessories and design sketches created during an almost four-decade-long career, “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,” is the first retrospective devoted to the renowned, French designer. Indisputably one of the most influential couturiers of recent decades, this groundbreaking, multimedia installation is organized along six different thematic sections tracing the designers influences, from the streets of Paris to the world of science fiction, while celebrating his ethos of, “equality, diversity and perversity.” Featuring many avant-garde examples that have never before been exhibited, the display highlights signature Gaultier inspirations and motifs, from bondage and body art, to mermaids and virgins, to the blue and white striped sailor shirt in all its themes and variations, to to the multicultural clash of folkloric influences including Hussars, Mongolians, Hassidic Jews, Frida Kahlo and China.
