From Dürer to Van Dyck: the Everhard Jabach Collection of Northern Art at the Louvre – Paris

June 20, 2013 through September 16, 2013 – The masterpieces by Bril, Dürer, Holbein, Rubens, Van Dyck and Van Orley gathered together for “A German at the Court of Louis XIV – From Dürer to Van Dyck: the Everhard Jabach Collection of Northern Art” serve as an overview of the Louvre’s impressive collection of Flemish and German works while illustrating the importance of Everhard Jabach, one of the greatest seventeenth century collectors who inspired and shaped the French taste for Northern art.  When his sumptuous holdings including Nordic, Old Masters of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and modernists of the seventeenth century were sold to Louis XIV, the foundation was laid for the modern day Louvre’s diverse collection by expanding the royal collection’s sole focus on Italian art to include many of the paintings and drawings celebrated in this display.
