– Featuring 55 paintings on canvas and paper in addition to sketches and pastels drawn from both public and private collections, this exceptional exhibition titled, “Georgia O’Keeffe: Modern Nature and Lake George,” explores the full range of work Georgia O’Keeffe produced from 1918 until the early 1930s when she lived for part of each year at Alfred Stieglitz’s 36-acre property located on the shore of Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. Among the most prolific and transformative years of the artist’s seven-decade career, integral to the development of her approach to modernism and abstraction, the display highlights her first forays into what would become her signature style including magnified botanical compositions inspired by the flowers and vegetables that she grew in her garden as in, “Petunias,” from 1925, “Jack-in-the-Pulpit No. 2” from 1930 and “Apple Blossoms,” from 1930, telescopic views of a single leaf or pairs of overlapping leaves that are based on the variety of trees that grew around Lake George as in, “Autumn Leaves,” from 1924, abstracted representations of the weathered barns and buildings on the Stieglitz property as in, “Lake George Barns,” from 1926  and panoramic landscape vistas of the lake and surrounding hills that influenced her subsequent celebrated work in New Mexico as in “Lake George with White Birch,” from 1921, “View of Lake George,” from 1922 and “Starlight Night, Lake George,” from 1922.

The first major retrospective devoted to this essential period of O’Keeffe’s career, it reveals how she found at Lake George a place to evolve her work without the distractions of life in New York City leading to the discovery of new subjects that included landscapes, flowers, fruit, trees, leaves and architecture.  Lake George served as a rural retreat for the artist, providing a new language of basic material for her art, which in turn evoked the spirit of place that was essential to O’Keeffe’s modern approach to the natural world.
