– Comprising 72 uniquely stunning artworks created by dozens of cultures over a period of more than two millennia, this exhibit juxtaposes masterpieces drawn from permanent collections of the Asian Art Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art which is currently closed for an extensive expansion. Blending paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and objects of design and decoration by artists ranging from Duchamp to Picasso, Sally Mann to Marilyn Minter and Jeff Koons to Yasumasa Morimura which mingle with works that span the far reaches of Asia, including a 1,000 year-old Indian sculpture of the Hindu deity Durga, a decorated Qur’an from sixteenth-century Persia, an elaborate, eighteenth century multi-panel screen from China and a nineteenth-century, Edo period, painted scroll from Japan, the works are presented in a manner that shifts the focus from their historical and cultural contexts, allowing the selections to speak in strictly aesthetic terms, highlighting the many uniquely gorgeous ways each example announces itself or solicits a viewer’s attention.
