Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity at the Met – New York

February 26, 2013 through May 27, 2013 – This groundbreaking exhibition focuses on how Manet, Monet, Renoir and their creative contemporaries portrayed modern life and particularly fashionable dress between approximately 1860 and 1890 as department stores, illustrated fashion magazines and ready-to-wear clothing sprang up to cater to a growing and affluent bourgeoisie. Although they did not strive to realistically render clothing, the Impressionists nevertheless did document attire and through it attitudes of their time by their consideration of portraiture as a snapshot of a person in their familiar surroundings.

79 masterpieces portraying 19th century fashionistas have been gathered together from major museums around the world juxtaposing them against 14 stunning period gowns as well as accessories like shoes, gloves, bags, parasols and corsets. Spread across eight galleries, among the tour-de-force works included in the presentation are Manet’s “La Parisienne” and “Young Lady of 1866”,  Renoir’s “Woman with the Umbrella” and “Madame Charpentier and Her Children”, Caillebotte’s “Paris Street: Rainy Day”, Courbet’s “Young Ladies on the Banks of the Seine,” Morisot’s “Figure of a Woman (Before the Theater)”plus Monet’s “Women in the Garden” and most impressively, making their North American debut, the remaining monumental panels of his unfinished version of “Luncheon on the Grass” on loan from the Musée d’Orsay Paris.
