Impressionists on the Water at the Legion of Honor – San Francisco

June 1, 2013 through October 13, 2013 – In honor of San Francisco’s hosting of the America’s Cup, the Legion of Honor invites viewers to embark on an artistic voyage with, “Impressionists on the Water,” a timely exhibition that explores the significant role sailing played in the lives of the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. Experience the artistic side of nautical life through more than 80 remarkable paintings and works on paper by Impressionists such as Caillebotte, Monet, Pissarro and  Renoir and Post-Impressionists such as Denis and Signac, a group whose breathtaking artistry reflects their own deep understanding and engagement with pleasure boating and competition.

Examination of the artistic engagement with boating as both pastime and painterly subject is at the heart of the exhibition. Innovations such as outdoor painting developed to capture the spirit and quick pace of recreational activities and the artists’ brushwork suggests both the atmospheric effects and the sensations of movement that contribute to the invigorating experience of boating.

Paintings on loan from prestigious international collections, including the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles and private collections are joined by paintings and works on paper from the museum’s own holdings. Highlights among many include Monet’s lyrical, “Boats Moored at Le Petit Gennevilliers,” from 1874, Renoir’s stunning, “Oarsmen at Chatou,” from 1879 and Caillebotte’s masterful, “Regatta at Argenteuil,” from 1893.
