December 11, 2013 through March 17, 2014

Spotlighting in combination the genius of Delacroix’s expressive brushstrokes and original use of color to capture light as well as the contribution of art historian and collector Étienne Moreau-Nélaton, who greatly influenced the perception of art in France during the nineteenth century through his extensive donations of the Moreau family collection to the French national collections, “Masterpieces from the Collection of Étienne Moreau-Nélaton,” presents a rare opportunity to view a series of Delacroix drawings and paintings rarely displayed due to the conditions of their bequest. Acquired by Moreau-Nélaton’s grandfather who was the first great Delacroix collector, they were donated to the Louvre in 1906 and include essential masterpieces that survey Delacroix’s entire career including portraits, landscapes, still lifes, representations of historical events and depictions of his North African travels.
