Sky Under the Roof at the Louvre – Paris

Sky Under the Roof at the Louvre – Paris

February 20, 2014 through May 19, 2014

– In, “Sky Under the Roof: Drawings for Parisian Ceilings of the Seventeenth Century,” 80 drawings and prints, most notably by Charles Le Brun and Simon Vouet, selected from the museum’s holdings and several important private collections, highlight a distinct period during the seventeenth century when the shift from flat to vaulted ceilings motivated a profound transformation in architectural decoration inspiring artists to develop innovative emblematic and ornamental treatments that play with organizing narrative, compartmentalizing space and alternating layers of illusion. Documenting four major monuments including the Louvre, the Hôtel Lambert and the Mazarin and Tuileries Palaces, the display features a compendium of quick sketches, painstaking figure studies, presentation drawings intended for patrons and models for subcontractors or printmakers, surveying the formal evolution of civil decoration in the French capital and revealing the central role of artists and the essential part ceiling decoration played in civic architecture.
